Internet Copywriting - Writing for the Web
Writing for the web is a special proposition. Every person who
reads your text has one finger on a mouse button. Lose their attention
for a moment and click! You're gone. This is pressure enough,
but many of your readers aren't even human. Most of the people
who would visit your web site first ask search engines for advice.
These search engines will give them a list of which Web sites
to visit, and yours will only be on that list if the search engine
robot liked your site. These robots, generally called spiders,
read Web sites using special complex algorithms. Just to make
things more difficult, each search engine uses a different algorithm,
and they keep their algorithms secret. Fortunately, there are
well established principles of preparing good content and copy
for the Internet. We understand these principles and have considerable
experience in putting them into action. We write content that
will impress the robot spiders, and yet be clear to old-fashioned
human visitors. We can entertain, inform, convey fun, imply restraint
and professionalism, and get that precise message across to the
visitor. We can help you edit, we can rewrite your content, or
we can work completely from scratch. We will find the right voice
for your organization, and we will stay within that voice throughout
the process.
Words sound different once they've been taken out of context,
placed on a written page, and served up to someone who knows nothing
about how you looked, what you felt like, or who you were talking
to when you said them. Thus written words require greater consideration
than spoken words. Something about computer displays alienates
these words even further. That's why we are so careful about the
way things are said. One thing we will never do is post content
without the client's approval. Whether we are editing, tweaking,
or writing from scratch, all content goes through an approval
process. We will be there to explain why we chose certain words
and phrases, but ultimately it is the client who decides.
